Dermoscopy Equipment
Equipment for Dermoscopy
Handheld dermatoscopes
There many different types of handheld scopes. There are scopes that use polarized light or standard LED light. There are scopes that allow to toggle from polarized to non-polarized mode. Some scopes can also be attached to a camera (smartphone / tablet).
It is the author's preference to use scopes that allow toggling between polarized and non polarized light because it provides additional information. When asked which scope is most recommended, the author's answer is - Try it out, hold it in your hand and see which ones feels best for you.
Here are some examples of handheld dermatoscopes that are currently on the market:
Systems for digital dermoscopy
There are many different systems for digital dermoscopy on the market. Every system has different features, including Storage and retrieval of lesions (clinical and dermoscopy images); total body imaging; and digital mole monitoring.
In addition, some systems use computer assisted features:
- Computer assisted total body imaging
- Computer assisted diagnosis of dermoscopy images
- Computer assisted hair and scalp analysis
- Automated PASI calculation
- 3D imaging
Every system is very different than the other, and the best thing is to try them out in real world conditions in order to find out if the workflow of the software is compatible with your individual workflow. Some examples include:
Cases / Attachments for smartphones
Several companies provide Dermoscope cases adapt to a smartphone or a tablet that provide good image quality. The images can be stored on the phone in specific apps and then be transferred to the medical record or systems for digital dermoscopy.
Examples include:
Attachments (lenses) for digital cameras
Dermoscopic lenses that attach to digital cameras provide very high quality images. Examples include:
Full body imaging systems
Apart from classic digital dermoscopic systems, there are vendors enabling the users to aquire and organise full body images in 2D or 3D. They are either integrated into digital dermoscopic systems, work with smartphones, or have a separate rigging system. Examples include:
